OUR OPEN MEETINGS

These Meetings will be held at:

St Nicholas Church Hall (Village Hall)
Church Lane
Chislehurst  BR7 5PE
(between the Bull and the Tiger's Head!)

Thursday 23rd February at 7.45pm

A Special Discussion Evening

Come along and join in the discussion, or just listen to others’ problems, successes and comments.  There will be a panel to lead discussions and answer questions, consisting of a head teacher of a dyslexia friendly school, a dyslexic adult, the parent of a dyslexic schoolchild, a teenager and a trained helpliner.  This is your chance to find out what worries other parents, teachers, pupils & adult dyslexics are experiencing, have the myths dispelled and discover the best way to tackle all aspects of dyslexic problems.  This is also a chance to get dyslexia in perspective, realising the strengths of dyslexic people and the opportunities available to them.  Older children very welcome, to share experiences with the teenager on our panel.

Thursday 26th April at 7.45pm

Dyslexia: Working Backwards by Dr David McLoughlin

David has long been one of the giants in the dyslexia world, being immensely knowledgeable and respected by all.  He works with both adults and children, and he strongly feels that seeing the impact dyslexia has had upon adults should always influence the way everyone works with dyslexic children – hence ‘working backwards’. He will be talking about issues across the whole life span that can result from being dyslexic.

5th July

“Self-Esteem”, preceded by our famous super-speedy AGM.

27th September

Coffee mornings

We have received funding from the Co-operative Community Membership Fund to hold a series of Coffee Mornings for parents and carers.  Do come along and enjoy a cuppa and a piece of homemade cake whilst finding out more about dyslexia in a relaxed, friendly environment.  There will be a short talk in each session on different areas affected by dyslexia , followed by a time to share ideas and resources and to chat to those who have similar concerns. Members of the Dyslexia Association will be on hand to answer questions and discuss individual issues.  You are welcome to bring your pre-school children, and we will be providing an arts and craft table for them.  However, we are unable to provide a crèche, but are quite happy for babies to remain in your care.  Due to the funding, these events will be free, and please do just drop in – there is no booking required.

Have you been to any of our meetings?

We have had excellent feedback about our open meetings. We are told how much parents, teachers and even the few children who come along, enjoy the informative talks.  Equally valued is the informal time afterwards, over a relaxing coffee or tea. This is the time to swap stories and get not only mutual support, but access to a range of professionals too.  Many a problem has been sorted out at this time.

Do you have any ideas for future speakers?  Would you like a different sort of meeting?  And what time of day and day of the week would you like it to be?

We would love to hear from you all!  This is YOUR association.  Please do make use of it.
